Selling Skin
This is one of my older works. It’s about the double-bladed sword of fame. I wrote this during my senior year in highschool but its still one of my favorites.. hope you like it.
“Selling Skin”
See my face. My name is no one.
My name will never be forgotten.
Gather ‘round and adore.
See the freakshow that’s in store.
This is the life I chose. This is the curse I chose.
I had everything a boy could want,
but I wanted more.
Welcome to the stage.
I chose to entertain.
Put on a mask to hide the shame.
Lights. Camera. Auction…
skin for sale to the highest bidder.
I sold myself and all that’s real
because that’s the price of fame.
See me laugh. See me cry.
See me lie strait at your face,
it’s my crime you have to pay.
I’ll make you laugh.
I’ll make you cry.
I’m a golden god
in the glittering Proscenium,
but who am I?
I want to embrace the madding crowd
as they stand and cheer and scream.
They love me…
if only I could love them all back.
Give me one true thing.
I’d give it all up again
to be that man in the chair.
The man in the chair
would give it all to be up there.
I have the world he thinks in envy, as I sing.
But he holds something I could never.
Give me one true thing.
..and when I wake, I wake alone.
Was it all just a dream?
Last night, I explode in a thousand fold
and vanish in between.
The storm before the calm I slept,
I wasn’t on my own.
But in the dread of light I see,
I don’t want to be alone.
Take it away. Take it all away
the lights, the crowd, the songs…
and there is nothing left in.
Nothing but a hollow soul
with celebrity skin.
..and in the end, I’m everything I’ve ever wanted to be…
…See my face. I’m everything but me.

wow.. its quite intense for a poem.. Superb man! Love it!
